Couple Random Shots from January

Here is  a little clip put together of some footage from the past swell. This storm dumped a foot of fresh snow and sent a fun little swell to greet us in the morning. Looks like a system will be impacting us late tonight and will be sending us a multi day wave event. So if you want to bear the temps and winter storm conditions this one is for you.Hope you all score-orlando-

Cape Scrod

After a lackluster beginning to the week, a few wisdom teeth removed, and yet another dumping of snow that prevented me from making it to the beach; Thursday got interesting.

The Streets of Boston have been reduced to paths, an obstical course for cars to play chicken in. Wednesdays deluge of snow made it even more fun, and by Thursday morning my car and driveway were free, but surf was the last thing on my mind. A phone call from a friend in RI informed me that since the wind, that usually kills our winter swells quickly, had backed off to almost nothing and there was still swell in the water, not much in RI, but swell none the less. My mind went straight to the Cape, and as fast as I could load the page, my mind was made up.

The cam was pure glass, maybe a light offshore, my first view was of what looked like a head high set. So, a quick 95 minute car ride later, we arrived, and apparently we were the only ones. The rest is just another epic unexpected day on the cape.........Enjoy! pics never do it justice.

ASP International & Quiksilver Announce $1 Million Quiksilver Pro New York

[ 0 ] January 26, 2011 | ASP International
The world's best surfers are coming to Long Island, New York.
The world's best surfers are coming to Long Island, New York.
HUNTINGTON BEACH, California/USA (Wednesday, January 26, 2011) – Quiksilver and the Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) today announced the Quiksilver Pro New York, set to take place on Long Island’s Long Beach from September 4-15. The Quiksilver Pro New York will be the 6th stop on the 2011 ASP World Tour and the first-ever ASP World Tour stop on the East Coast of the United States. The event will offer a $1 million dollar prize purse to competitors, an amount unprecedented in professional surfing. The Quiksilver Pro New York will expand the Quiksilver Pro Global Series, which also includes the Quiksilver Pro Gold Coast in Australia (February 26-March 9) and the Quiksilver Pro France (October 4-15).
“We are beyond excited to host the biggest pro surf event in the world on Long Island this September,” said Bob McKnight, CEO of Quiksilver. “There has always been a huge contingent of dedicated surfers and surf enthusiasts on the East Coast and they will now get a chance to watch the world’s best surfers in Long Beach. We are also bringing the best and brightest Quiksilver, Roxy and DC athletes to New York City, the largest media arena in the world, for twelve days of surf, skate, BMX, fashion, art and music that will bring incredible global attention to these phenomenal athletes and the action sports culture and lifestyle.”
“When I was young, I remember some great waves on Long Island with my brother Sean and our friends,” said Kelly Slater, 10x ASP World Champion. “I’m really looking forward to being in New York. This event itself will be unique and kind of an unknown for us and bringing the ASP tour to Long Island should be fun cause there’s a big surf culture there already and some great surf shops.”
“ASP International is very pleased to sanction the Quiksilver Pro New York, which joins a short and prestigious list of ASP World Tour sites around the world, including Australia, Portugal, France, South America and Hawaii’s North Shore,” said Brodie Carr, ASP International CEO. “In addition to bringing the world’s best surfers to the East Coast of the United States, Quiksilver is breaking boundaries as the first event in history to put up a $1 Million prize purse. This speaks volumes of Quiksilver’s commitment to excellence, and the ASP has every confidence in our teams working together to produce the best possible event. Long Island is considered one of the hallowed sites of East Coast surfing and the experts at both Quiksilver and the ASP, as well as the unparalleled talent of the ASP Top 34, will come together to make this one of the most memorable events in surfing history.”
Surfline.com, the world’s leading forecaster of wave and surf conditions, conducted an independent long term 15-year wave study for western Long Island, New York, summarizing that September 4-15 is one of the most consistent time periods for sizable surf in the region. In addition, independent local feedback supports these findings, with September typically averaging 3+ hurricane swells, typically with at least one 3-4 day swell. Surfline.com is the official forecaster for The Quiksilver Pro New York.
“This was a very fascinating study,” said Sean Collins, Chief Forecaster and President of Surfline.com. “The surf climate in Western Long Island is greatly affected by the underwater Hudson Canyon offshore, which can turn average surf into very high quality surf comparable to many of the best surf spots in the world on the right day. We are also in a La Nina year, so we expect the 2011 Atlantic hurricane season to be a little more active and hopefully we can score great surf with the world’s top surfers in one of the best cities in the world.”
The competition dates will include the Quiksilver Pro Trials Presented by Unsound Surf, the premiere surf shop in Long Beach on September 3. Following will be the Quiksilver Pro New York WT competition window, set for September 4-15.
“We are happy that the Quiksilver Pro New York is coming to Long Beach,” said Long Beach City Council President Thomas R. Sofield, Jr. “These professional surfers will see first hand what the local surf community gets to appreciate every day – our beautiful white sandy beaches and some of the best waves around.”
In addition, Quiksilver, Roxy and DC will bring a world-class roster of athletes to New York City during the month of September for a series of demos, films, parties, music concerts and art exhibits that represent the best of surf, skate and snowboarding cultures.

Few from yesterday

thanks caroline for the pics

GUTTERS

After a bumpy, lumpy frustrating morning of big, fast, kind of confused wind swell; everything found it's focus and came together nicely. While surfing one of the usual haunts in RI, a few tantalizing peaks and a little walking led to new and exciting things. Pretty much just going to say that no one has ever surfed this spot, and it's one that may just remain that way, with the exception of a few fellow bloggers' and folk. Somehow we had enough self control to snap a few pics.

..........and continued for another 50 yds.
Not big, but empty and hollow for about 3 hrs.
Slabby to say the least, make the wave or get poked.

I know you all got some today as well, looking forward to the pics.

Ricky! Hawaii? dang

 CALIFORNIA......kinda

All the pictures I manages to take after 9 days in San Diego.........I was busy.

Northern Exposure

No pain no gain.

The pain?

The gain...

Good turns had by all. We were lacking in the 'Snow base' category but we all made it out alive. Snow in the forecast again (Potential back to back hitter) - looking towards Canadia' to scope out our next links but we'll see where the weather takes us.
Heres to the economy doing us a favor and to the champagne on the way.
Cheers.

Will the Eddie Go???

Stumbled upon a contest over at Sunset...I don't know what its for but there wasn't really anybody around. Needless to say the rains and North winds yesterday made it messy.
Pipe looking not so desirable.
A few waves came through from the old West swell, but the question remains...will the Eddie happen Thursday?

Yepp that was today...

Well I slept in after a depressing showing of the wind swell yesterday and was greeted with a beautiful glassy day. So I thought I would walk out back on the deck to check things out and started snapping some shots. And your not going to believe it. There was waves and it was super glassy and no one in sight, with waist plus sets. These are the classic MTK days that I love. With 1 foot at 14 sec from the east I have to say I may of been the only surfer in the water from Maine to Florida on this day.Looks like solid swell will be in the water weds morning and some of the crew will be coming down to try and score. See ya out there-orlando- Heres a few shots from today

Alden was not leaving the beach without a session...

Small windwell in the am and possible solid se swell later this week

Well the temps were brutally cold the past week or so on the south coast and the flatness prevailed. But the weather is getting a big exciting down here in southern ri. With a small bump forecaster for the morning and the winds are gusting over forty knots. The swell already looks to be waist to chest high and with these winds we might be in for a little surprise in the morning. Beyond that there looks to be maybe some solid se swell to start building Tuesday in into Wednesday. So keep your fingers crossed and we see what the morning brings-orlando-

Out West

Well. Been out West for a little skiing action. Already in Portland, Oregon and its raining (which could translate to 3 feet of snow up on Mount Hood tomorrow). Just flipping through a few from Colorado and decided to post a few...
